Clowes Order first Timson T48A Bookpress

December 2003

Timsons' 100 years of experience in printing machinery design is combining with William Clowes' 200 years of printing expertise to create a new force in consumer book production.

When the new Clowes factory at Beccles in East Anglia comes on stream in 2004, the first extended width Timson T48A bookpress in the UK will go into production. With a top speed of 450 metres per minute, this custom-built press is capable of generating over two million printed pages per hour.

"It has been a long and hard road to reach the position at which we need this production capability," says Clowes Managing Director Ian Foyster. "We completed the sale of our current Beccles site to Tesco last week, and will complete relocation to our new factory on the edge of town next August, and we are now delighted to confirm the order for our first Timson T48A bookpress. This new investment, coupled with new binding machinery, will give us the capacity to produce over 1 million books per week."

This T48A has been specially designed by Timsons to meet Clowes' requirements. Its extra width will enable production of 96 pages per revolution in Royal format. The semi-automatic plate changing system will keep make-ready time to an absolute minimum, maximising the time available for profitable production. The T48A will provide an increased throughput for the bindery of up to 100,000 extra books per day.

"This investment demonstrates that the British book printing industry is dynamic and forward thinking," comments Timsons Managing Director Peter Brown. "We are particularly pleased to welcome a new Timson customer."

Whilst this order is being progressed, discussions are already taking place on the possibility of adding a second Timson press at Clowes.

The new press will add significant capacity to the Clowes print room, which houses two Solna two-unit and one four-unit webs. An additional Solna two-unit web press is being considered for installation in March 2004 at the new site.

In addition to consumer books, these presses are also used to produce directories and reference books, industrial catalogues and legal works.

100 mile Marathon Man

July 2003

Steve Riportella, Spare Parts Manager at Timsons Inc, recently completed the 8th Annual Kettle Moraine Endurance Run. Steve, a 37 year-old father of three, was one of only 41 participants to finish, completing the course with a time of 26 hours 46 minutes. After having previously run the 50 mile marathon on three occasions, Steve felt he had a personal goal and ambition to contest the 100 mile run.

The race was a gruelling battle against nature, heavy rain, the night, blisters and sore muscles whilst trying to keep eating, drinking and running. Founded in 1996, the race attracted a wide variety of participants with ages ranging from 19-65. The course consisted of two out-and-back legs of 62 and 38 miles of rolling and wooden trails through Kettle Moraine State Park in Wisconsin.

EB President and CEO John Edwards, Director of Technical Services Ken Thompson and Timsons Vice President of Sales, Bill Songer, sign the deal.

First T48A ZMR for Edwards Brothers

July 2003

Edwards Brothers, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, takes delivery of its first Timson T48A ZMR bookpress in its 110th year. This will join five other Timson T32 presses in the group. The flexibility of the new press will allow EB to increase their two colour capacity in 8.5 x 11" and dramatically cut make-ready time on single colour work. Plates on one unit can be changed quickly, simply (no tools) and safely while the press is in full production on the other unit. Changeover is virtually instantaneous at full production speed, with just a handful of waste copies. 'It's like having one and a half 8.5 x 11 presses' says Marty Stadtmiller, EB's Vice President of Operations.

Charity Husky Expedition

April 2003

Customer Service Manager, Nick Janzen, set out on 16th March facing the arduous challenge of controlling a pack of tireless husky dogs as they drew him across 200 kilometres of snow and ice. One can only imagine how difficult it must have been to balance on the two sledge rails as it reached speeds of up to 25 km/h; especially when a third foot was required to operate the brake.

Nick spent eight days surviving the cruel conditions of Oversoppero, Lapland, about 160 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle, with temperatures sometimes below -20°C.

Lead singer of 'Steeleye Span,' Maddy Prior, was among the 12 people who helped raise a total of around £50,000 for charity. Approximately £4,500 was raised by Nick for Cancer Research UK.

This has been a long-time dream of Nick's so we are all very happy he has finally fulfilled his ambition and proud of his support of Cancer Research.

St Michel Print, based in Mikkeli, Finland is one of Europe's leading thin paper printing houses.

Like their first two Timson presses, this new T32 is specially designed for the production of religious and other books printed on lightweight papers. The combination of a higher web speed and a wider web significantly increases productivity. Future expansion of this press is built into the original design concept - both print unit and folder modules can be exchanged enabling St.Michel Print to produce a wider range of book sizes to meet developing market requirements.
